On this third Advent Sunday, I will paraphrase verses from an eighth-century Buddhist teacher, Shantideva, whose philosophies about happiness continue to inspire me to be a better person as I prepare for the birth of our Lord and Savior.
When we care for others’ needs before our own, happiness comes from that selfless act.
We must never stop trying to make the hardships of others less painful.
We must continue to relieve the sorrows of the less fortunate.
Those who have struggled to find joy must be shown kindness and love.
We must protect those who cannot defend themselves and be a guide for all who travel hazardous roads.
We must be the vehicle for all seeking to reach the other shore.
May we offer food to all who hunger in every country through every moment in time.
May we reach those who seek refuge, shelter, and clothing everywhere until happiness reigns.
As long as there are those needing help, love, light, peace, and grace, may we be prepared to aid them and care for them to the best of our abilities.
Until we can be a loving beacon of hope for all, may the happiness we feel be the lighthouse that all turn to in times of doubt and fear.
May Christ, the Light of the world, be the reason we prepare for His coming on Christmas Day.
