Yesterday, I watched a movie called “Play the Flute,” and the following question crossed my mind. Do Christians sound the trumpet about God’s Word and His Son, Jesus Christ, or do they play the flute when they speak to their families and friends of God’s love, grace, and forgiveness? If you know how loud a trumpet sounds, then you know what Christians should be showing the world about God’s love through their words, thoughts, and deeds. If, however, you know how soft a flute sounds, then you know how most Christians quietly hope that no one asks them to speak about God. Why? We live in a world where most people don’t believe in God, where anger and hatred are the acceptable emotions rather than peace and love, and where forgiveness has been replaced with apathy towards others and the “me-me syndrome.”
In reflecting on Psalm 19: 7-11 (KJV), I find my answer for being a trumpet, and I declare every morning the glory of God. I see His awesome power and love in the creation of His beautiful world. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.”
I proudly proclaim that I am a trumpet, and I know why I loved playing percussion in my high school years. I am a Christian, and I am a child of God. Which instrument are you?
